Moonlit Dip with Moon Rabbit- Framed Mokuhanga Japanese Woodblock Print, Limited Edition
"Moonlit Dip with Moon Rabbit" is inspired by 1880s Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock print series, "One Hundred Aspects of the Moon" by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi and derived from a paper-cut composition carved from a single sheet of paper, then transferred wood block which I chiseled by hand and evolved into this print on mulberry paper.
The piece originated as a photo I took of a seated woman on a dock sipping her toes in the ocean at sunset at Koh Rong Island, off the coast of Cambodia. I added the rabbit to reflect the eastern tradition of interpreting a rabbit shape, rather than a man's face, in the moon.
The work was printed by hand in the traditional Japanese Mokuhanga woodblock print style with water-based ink applied to a chisel-carved relief woodblock. I used a boar's hair brush to apply ink and nori (rice glue) to the woodblock and pressed the Japanese Washi mulberry paper with a bamboo-wrapped Baren.
The piece is presented in a high-quality aluminum gallery frame with stand and wall-hanging options. All art and framing materials are archival and acid-free. Each limited edition original print is numbered and signed. Slight variations in color and form are expected due to the hand-made nature of this work.
